The Gifu Nobunaga Fireworks Festival celebrates the city's deep connection to the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga, who made Gifu his base during the Sengoku period. Held along the Nagara River in late July, around 10,000 to 12,000 shells illuminate the night while traditional ukai cormorant fishing boats glow with lanterns on the water below. The combination of ancient fishing craft, illuminated Gifu Castle on the hill above, and bursting fireworks creates a uniquely layered cultural spectacle. Yukata-clad festival-goers fill the riverside banks and nearby park viewing zones.
