Fushimi Inari-taisha is the head shrine of around 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan, dedicated to the god of rice, sake and business. The famous Senbon Torii (thousands of torii gates) line the 4-kilometre trail to the 233-metre summit of Mount Inari, donated by businesses and individuals over centuries. The trail passes through sub-shrines, fox statues and bamboo groves, and the mountain can be hiked in around two hours. Early morning or late evening visits reward with an almost mystical, crowd-free atmosphere.
