Tomonoura's fireworks festival fires shells directly above its centuries-old harbour, where wooden fishing boats and traditional stone jetties create a living museum backdrop. Around 2,500 fireworks are launched from a barge anchored in the Numakuma Peninsula bay, with the best views from the historic Bentenjima causeway. The town inspired Hayao Miyazaki's 'Ponyo' and retains an otherworldly charm after dark. Accommodation in the adjacent traditional inns (ryokan) books up months ahead.
