Hakata松囃子 (Matsubayashi) Procession — Hakata Dontaku Origin Parade

Fukuoka (Hakata) · Fukuoka · Kyushu

The Hakata Matsubayashi is the ceremonial core of the wider Hakata Dontaku Port Festival and is recognised as one of Japan's oldest continuous urban processions, dating to the Kamakura period. Participants dressed as the three deities Fukujin, Ebisu, and Daikoku ride horses through the streets of Hakata accompanied by shamisen, fue flutes, and hand-held matsuri props in a stately, colourful display. Unlike the larger Dontaku carnival that surrounds it, the Matsubayashi preserves a solemn dignity rooted in medieval merchant traditions of Hakata. It officially opens the Golden Week festival season for Fukuoka and draws both devout locals and curious international visitors.
