Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji has earned the nickname 'Momiji no Eikan-dō' — the temple of autumn leaves — thanks to its extraordinary concentration of maple trees that blaze red and orange across tiered garden terraces and pond-side pathways. The multicoloured reflection of foliage in the large central pond is one of Kyoto's most photographed autumn scenes. During November, the temple hosts special extended evening illuminations that transform the garden into a luminous dreamscape. The famous Mikaeri Amida statue, which looks over its shoulder, is housed here and draws faithful visitors year-round.
