Sounkyo Gorge, carved by the Ishikari River through Daisetsuzan National Park, transforms into one of Hokkaido's most spectacular autumn canvases from late September. Vertical basalt columns such as Ginga-no-taki and Ryusei-no-taki waterfalls are framed by vivid maple and rowan foliage. Visitors can walk the riverside promenade or take the Sounkyo Ropeway up to Kurodake's slopes for sweeping panoramic colour. The small onsen village at the gorge base offers night-illumination walks after dark.
