Daitoku-ji is a vast Rinzai Zen temple complex in northern Kyoto comprising 24 sub-temples, many of which open their gates to visitors in autumn to reveal exquisite dry landscape and moss gardens framed by maples and ginkgos. Sub-temples such as Daisen-in, Zuihō-in, and Kōtō-in are particularly celebrated for their atmospheric koyo, with raked gravel gardens set against richly coloured foliage. Kōtō-in's moss path carpeted in fallen maple leaves is a perennial favourite for photographers. The human-scale walled enclosures create a sense of quiet discovery rare in more tourist-dense locations.
