Mt. Daisen, nicknamed 'the Fuji of the Chugoku region', stands 1,729 m above sea level and offers some of western Japan's most dramatic high-altitude autumn foliage. The beech forests on its upper slopes turn a brilliant gold by mid-October, while lower maple and oak forests follow in early November. The Daisen Nature Trail and Kagikake Pass trail are popular hiking routes that offer sweeping views across Tottori and out to the Sea of Japan. The historic Daisen-ji temple precincts at the mountain's base are also beautifully coloured and accessible without hiking.
