Mitsumine Shrine stands at approximately 1,100 metres elevation in the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, surrounded by ancient Japanese cedar and deciduous forest that turns vivid gold and crimson in mid-October. The wolf-deity shrine is approached via a sacred cedar avenue, and the mountain air carries the sweet scent of fallen leaves throughout autumn. Wide observation decks provide sweeping views over layer upon layer of colour-drenched ridgelines disappearing into morning mist. The journey by Seibu Railway and bus from Ikebukuro is itself a scenic experience through the Chichibu river valley.
