Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture is home to Japan's most famous wisteria display, including a single 150-year-old white wisteria tree that spreads over 1,000 square metres on a supporting trellis. CNN Travel has named the park one of the world's 31 most beautiful places. During the Wisteria Festival (late April to mid-May), visitors walk beneath cascading tunnels of purple, pink, yellow, and white wisteria in full bloom. Evening illuminations extend the magic after dark, transforming the hanging flower clusters into glowing curtains of violet and white that reflect in the park's ornamental ponds.
