The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in western Kyoto is one of Japan's most iconic natural settings, where thousands of giant bamboo culms rise to create a rustling, cathedral-like canopy. The main path runs near Tenryu-ji temple and the Okochi Sanso villa garden, making it easy to combine with other Arashiyama attractions. The grove is most magical in the early morning before crowds arrive, or during the annual Hanatoro light-up event in December when lanterns illuminate the path. The sound of the bamboo swaying in the breeze was designated one of Japan's 100 Soundscapes by the Environment Ministry.
