The Nebuta Museum WA·RASSE, opened in 2011 beside Aomori Port, preserves and displays the magnificent hand-painted and backlit Nebuta lantern floats that are the centrepiece of the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri summer festival. During winter, when the city is blanketed in snow, the museum offers a warm immersive alternative, allowing visitors to walk among the giant illuminated figures at close range year-round. Interactive exhibits explain the history, craftsmanship, and music of the Nebuta tradition, and visitors can try taiko drumming. The dramatic crimson exterior of the building itself is a landmark of the Aomori waterfront.
