One of the Tohoku Three Great Festivals, Akita Kanto Matsuri takes place 3–6 August along Akita's central Kantodori avenue. Each kanto pole stands up to 12 metres tall and bears 46 round paper lanterns on bamboo cross-arms, representing rice ears heavy with grain — a prayer for a bountiful harvest. Skilled performers called sashite balance these illuminated poles on their foreheads, chins, hips, and palms while taiko drums and flutes play in the background. A daytime 'tryout' session allows visitors to attempt balancing a smaller pole themselves.
