The Akita Kantō Festival is one of the Tōhoku Three Great Summer Festivals alongside Sendai Tanabata and Aomori Nebuta, drawing approximately 1.3 million visitors each August to Akita City's main boulevard. Each kantō pole is 12 metres tall and carries up to 46 glowing paper lanterns representing ears of rice, symbolising a prayer for a bountiful harvest. Skilled performers called 'sashite' balance these poles — weighing up to 50 kilograms — using only their forehead, shoulder, lower back, or palm in sequences of extraordinary physical precision. Daylight parades and workshop sessions allow visitors to attempt the balance technique under guidance.
