The Lake Akan Winter Festival takes place on and around the frozen surface of Lake Akan, a crater lake famous for its rare marimo moss balls and its Ainu indigenous community. The festival features a dramatic finale with fireworks launched directly from the ice, illuminating the snow-covered forests of Mount Oakan and Mount Meakan reflected in the frozen lake. Ainu cultural performances, including traditional music and dance, are integrated into the programme, making this one of Hokkaido's most culturally distinctive winter events. Ice sculptures, bonfires, and onsen access at the adjacent Akanko Onsen village complete the experience.
