Held June 30–July 2 at Shōman-in (Aizen-dō) in Tennoji, Aizen Matsuri is traditionally regarded as the start of Osaka's summer festival season. The festival honours Aizen Myoo, a deity associated with love and marriage, and features a golden portable shrine (mikoshi) shaped like a treasure boat paraded through the Tsuruhashi and Shinsekai neighbourhoods. Yukata-clad participants and the election of an Aizen Musume (Aizen maiden) are beloved local traditions. The surrounding area fills with food stalls and the festive mood signals the true arrival of Osaka summer.
