Tento-zan (207 m), the hill overlooking Abashiri on the Sea of Okhotsk coast, is crowned with the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum and the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples, but in autumn it becomes one of Eastern Hokkaido's finest koyo viewpoints. The hillside forest of maple, birch, and oak turns deep crimson and gold, framing panoramic views over Lake Abashiri, the Shiretoko Peninsula, and on clear days, the distant outline of Kunashiri Island. The walking trail from the lakeside car park to the hilltop passes through a canopy of colour before revealing the coastal panorama. It pairs naturally with a visit to the Abashiri Prison Museum on the same hill complex.
