Hokkaido Autumn: Japan's Earliest Fall Foliage

Japan's First Autumn: September in Hokkaido

While mainland Japan waits until November for autumn, Hokkaido's mountains begin turning color in mid-September — among the earliest autumn foliage in all of Japan. The season progresses from the high peaks of Daisetsuzan (Japan's largest national park) downward through the central highlands, reaching coastal cities by late October. This 6-week progression means Hokkaido offers autumn color from mid-September through early November.

Hokkaido autumn has a distinct character: birch and larch forests turn golden (rather than the red maple dominant in Honshu), mixed with patches of crimson Japanese rowan and deep green conifers. The vast landscapes, active volcanoes, and clear autumn skies create a more dramatic, wilderness-scale autumn than the intimate temple gardens of Kyoto.

Tip: Hokkaido's autumn starts 6 weeks before Kyoto — visit in early October for the sweet spot where lowland forests peak and weather is still pleasant (10-18°C daytime).

Daisetsuzan: Where Autumn Begins

Daisetsuzan National Park (Japan's largest, 2,268 km²) is where Japan's autumn officially starts each year. The summit of Mount Asahidake (2,291m, Hokkaido's highest peak) turns color in mid-September, with the alpine zone creating a patchwork of crimson, gold, and green visible from the Asahidake Ropeway (¥3,200 round trip). The ropeway carries you to 1,600m where short walking trails pass through peak autumn color.

The Sounkyo Gorge area peaks in early October with 200m columnar cliff walls draped in autumn forest. Ginga and Ryusei Falls flanked by autumn maples are the gorge's most photographed spots. The Kurodake Ropeway + Chairlift (¥3,300 combined) reaches high-elevation viewpoints. Sugatami Pond near Asahidake reflects the autumn mountains in still water — one of Hokkaido's most iconic autumn images. Access: Asahikawa (2 hours from Sapporo by JR), then bus to Asahidake or Sounkyo.

Tip: The Asahidake Ropeway area peaks around September 20-30 — this is literally the first autumn color in Japan. Go on a clear morning for mountain panoramas without cloud interference.

Central Hokkaido: October Peak

Jozankei Onsen (50 minutes from Sapporo by bus, ¥790) is Sapporo's nearest autumn escape — a hot spring town in a gorge that turns brilliant red in early-mid October. Combine autumn viewing with a soak at one of the many ryokan offering day-use baths (¥800-1,500). The Futami Suspension Bridge and Hoheikyo Dam (free, 20 min further) offer dramatic autumn panoramas. Evening illuminations run throughout the season.

Lake Shikotsu (1 hour from Sapporo) has crystal-clear water reflecting autumn hillsides — boat tours (¥1,650) show the stunning transparency. Lake Toya (2 hours from Sapporo) combines autumn colors with volcanic landscapes and lakeside hot springs. Noboribetsu Onsen nearby has autumn forest above its dramatic Jigokudani (Hell Valley) of steaming vents. The Furano/Biei area (2 hours from Sapporo) turns golden with larch forests backing the famous rolling patchwork farmland.

Tip: Jozankei is Sapporo's best autumn day trip — just 50 minutes by bus, spectacular gorge colors, and hot spring bathing to warm up on cool October evenings.

Southern Hokkaido & Lakes

Onuma Quasi-National Park (20 minutes from Hakodate by JR) peaks in late October with maple-covered islands dotting a lake beneath the snow-capped Mount Komagatake volcano. Cycling around the lake (¥1,000/hour rental) passes through continuous autumn color. Lake Konuma next door is quieter with excellent reflections on calm mornings.

Matsumae (Hokkaido's southernmost town) has late-season autumn in early November around its castle ruins. Nopporo Forest Park (30 minutes from Sapporo) offers easy autumn walking with a historical village museum. Shiraoi Upopoy (Ainu cultural center, ¥1,200) has a lakeside setting that's beautiful in autumn. The coastal drive from Hakodate through southern Hokkaido passes through small towns with scattered autumn trees against blue sea — a scenic road trip in late October.

Tip: Onuma's lake + volcano + autumn combination peaks in the third week of October. The early morning mirror reflections of colored mountains in the still lake are photography gold.

Planning & Road Trip Tips

A Hokkaido autumn road trip is one of Japan's finest driving experiences. The empty roads, vast colorful landscapes, and frequent onsen stops make for an ideal self-drive journey. A recommended 5-day route: Sapporo → Furano/Biei (day 1-2) → Daisetsuzan/Sounkyo (day 3) → Jozankei or Noboribetsu (day 4) → Sapporo (day 5). Rental cars from ¥4,000/day.

Weather: October daytime temperatures 8-16°C (warm layers essential, especially at elevation). Mountain areas can see first snow in mid-October — check forecasts for higher routes. The Hokkaido Expressway Pass (¥8,200/7 days for foreign visitors) covers toll roads. Gas stations are less frequent in rural Hokkaido — refuel when below half tank. Book onsen ryokan in advance for October weekends (popular with domestic tourists). Autumn driving in Hokkaido is generally safe, but watch for deer crossing roads at dawn and dusk.

Tip: Rent a car for Hokkaido autumn — public transport doesn't reach the most spectacular viewpoints. The empty roads and vast scenery make driving here a pleasure, not a chore.
